On 3 October 2017 the second stage of the International Future Lights in Ceramics competition took place at Staffordshire University. It was great to see Ireland succeed in this competition with Chloë Dowds making it through to the finals and succeeding as a “Future Light” after presenting to an International jury. Chloë herself was very happy with the outcome -

“I'm so happy to announce that I've been awarded a Future Light in Ceramics 2017/2018! Future Lights stands for innovative and creative young artists, designers, art historians and researchers. Their work has been selected as outstanding in it's modern approach, setting an example in trends for the future. Out of over 60 applicants, 18 were shortlisted and 6 of us received our Future Lights awards following a presentation to the judges in Stoke-on-Trent. I'm so excited to be involved with Ceramics and it's Dimensions and for what next year will hold for us! Thank you Future Lights!”.

“The Future Lights competition is designed to build new bridges and provide a platform for recent graduates to further their careers.” Wilhelm Siemen, Director, Porzellanikon

Future Lights is an annual competition for people in the early stages of a career in ceramics. The aims of the competition are to:

  • Encourage cross-disciplinary learning and approaches by bringing together the ceramic designers, art historians, researchers, makers and artists of the future
  • Support people in the early stages of a career in ceramics by exhibiting their work at high profile ceramics exhibitions across Europe
  • Promote ceramics to a younger audience, though identifying potential ambassadors.

The competition is run by Porzellanikon and co-organised by Staffordshire University, the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland and the British Ceramics Biennial.

Each year, recent graduates from across Europe are invited to apply to Porzellanikon, setting out their experience and responding to the year’s theme. In 2018, the Future Lights theme will be: Sustainability – in materials, processes and motifs.

Applications for Future Lights 2018 will open shortly, keep an eye on the opportunities section of our website.
