Cillian Ó Súilleabháin

Cillian Ó Súilleabháin

Cillian is a designer and furniture-maker based in Co. Carlow, Ireland. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin, he began his professional life as a mechanical engineer. In late 2011, he set up his own studio, Cillian Ó Súilleabháin Furniture.  Cillian works to commission, applying a minimal, geometric style to his award winning, hand-made furniture. His work is concerned with man’s relationship with his environment. Through his designs he explores the tension between formal mathematics and the organic nature of wood. The realisation of his designs requires an unforgiving accuracy and a deep understanding of the material. This year Cillian has been named Emerging Maker of the year by the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland in their annual Future Makers awards. He has also been selected for DCCoI's PORTFOLIO: Critical Selection 2015-2016 publication; one of 22 Irish makers who “represent the leading edge of contemporary craft and design in a world-class context.” Cillian’s work has featured at a variety of galleries and shows in Ireland and the UK; including Maison et Objet, Paris; TENT London; MADE London and the Hunt Museum, Limerick.  He has also  featured in numerous magazines and newspapers, including Wallpaper*, Homes and Gardens, the Irish Times and the Sunday Times. His work is in public and privations collections in Ireland, UK, USA and China.
