déanta Design with Matthew O’Malley

Inspired by the heritage of making on the island of Ireland déanta Design is committed to making beautiful objects which are of their time and yet informed by tradition. The Carvel Chair is made using the techniques of traditional boat construction which predominate along the west coast. A collaboration with the shipwright Matthew O'Malley, it is made with wind-felled Irish larch, hand shaped and fixed with copper rivets. This technique produces a shell which is incredibly light and strong, and flexes to the user.

About the designer: Andrew Clancy was educated as an architect, in UCD, graduating in 2001. He established Clancy Moore Architects with Colm Moore in 2006. His Strand Lamps were officially launched as part of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s exhibition Vernacular at LDF2013. Based on the success of these in 2014 Clancy established déanta Design.

About the maker: Matthew O'Malley was apprenticed as a shipwright on the Dunbrody famine ship project in 2001, today he makes boats and buildings informed by this tradition.
